Togo extends English teaching to all primary schools

Togo will extend English language teaching to CM1 and CM2 classes starting from the 2025-2026 school year, making this language universal across all preschool and primary schools in the country.
In preparation for this extension, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has been training inspectors and educational advisors in all regions since July 2025. Textbooks and digital resources have also been developed to support this early learning.
This measure follows a pilot phase launched in 2023 in CP1, CP2, CE1, and CE2 classes. According to the ministry, the objective is to prepare young Togolese for a globalized world where English proficiency is a major asset.
The initiative is part of the Education Sector Plan, aimed at creating an inclusive and quality school system, and aligns with Togo’s membership in the Commonwealth by establishing the foundations of functional bilingualism from primary school.
